Brighton Campus Updates

community news – 2 december 2024 edition

This fortnight we have had lots of opportunities to finalise and celebrate the year. There have been exams, final assessments and highlights such as watching the interaction between Cycle 6 and Cycle 1 students as they collaborated in psychology experiments. After working all semester on skills of riding as a group, the Bike Occupations students went to Lysterfield Lake Park and rode Olympic-standard trails.

Cycle 5s ventured into the lab for some flame and reaction testing while political discussions in Cycle 4 included discovering music that is based on past political challenges. Cycle 5s and Cycle 6 Year 11s had a challenging week of exams with all the anticipation and stress that exams bring.

However, the highlight was the celebration of the 2024 students and their achievements this year. After exams were finished, we celebrated at the Brighton campus. Some of our students have been at our school for 17 years and we are proud of the time they have spent with us and have no doubts that they will do great things with their Montessori education.

This month has been a very full month. Our Cycle 3 students walked back and forth from Starfish Swim School and their swimming skills on display in the pool were spectacular. Students had to be organised, listen carefully and be brave to try new skills.

Cycle 3 students also prepared and ran their Night of the Notables and Build Your Own Country (BYOC) projects. They dressed to impress, made speeches and answered some curly questions about their chosen topic. Each presentation venue was packed and a great night was had by all.

Cycle 4 and 5 students have been continuing their work in Occupations. Café has run successfully; Production is starting to take shape, and many great creations have been printed and developed. However, the talk of the school was the two newly-arrived chickens. Students from all Cycles have enjoyed holding and watching the chickens as they have settled in to their new home at our College.

Year 12 students have finished official exams and are now half-way through the exam process. There have been many late nights and tired eyes as they give it their all and realise their potential.

Finally, another major event has been the arrival of two outdoor table tennis tables. Students, teachers and parents have all enjoyed a game or two. It was great to see so many hidden talents emerging, such as Rafael and Yasmin’s epic game. Be on the look-out for the next big game when the wind is low and conditions are just right.

Camp with our Cycle 5 students has been one of a bunch of amazing events at the busy Brighton campus. We rode on a rail trail for three days and had an eventful start to the adventure when the rain and hail arrived! Thankfully, the weather changed and became a little friendlier with some mild, sunny days.

Students and teachers really enjoyed the challenge of the trail and they also enjoyed each other’s company. After three-days on bikes we were pretty excited to swap two wheels for the water. Students and staff all enjoyed learning to navigate sea kayaks before it was time to head back to Brighton.

Aside from the adventures of camp, the Brighton Campus also recently enjoyed Grandparents Day and Father’s Day and who can forget the fun of Book Week? We have also enjoyed some interesting language activities and our Cycle 6 students have put in a great effort with those.

Finally, we were thrilled to hold our Open Day at Brighton Campus at the weekend. It was a very successful event with a great turnout and plenty of interest from some potential new MMC families!

The holidays are over and during the last few weeks students have gradually settled into the rhythm and routine of school. Happy to be reunited with friends and teachers, they are all looking forward to what Term 3 has to offer.

In Cycle 3, students are working hard to prepare for the annual Night of the Notables. We can’t wait to see what famous and historic characters our young people re-create.

BYOC, the Junior School production is coming together and students are also making the most of the brighter weather and the range of play options available at lunchtime, from putting up tarps to playing soccer and basketball.

Cycle 4 and 5 students have now settled into their new occupations and the busy bike group has already repaired some bikes and have enjoyed rides to Allnutt Park.

The Café group is gearing up to launch again and have been exploring exactly what it means to run a sustainable café. Horticulture have planted seeds, cleaned up areas around the back of the school and have fixed up the compost system. Robotics projects are also coming along nicely with projects being built including a guitar, more remote-control cars and some interesting boxes being designed in Fusion 360.

Our senior students are working hard to stay on top of all their work and there has been a definite increased focus as they push towards the end of the year.
