Cycle 5

CYCLE 5 Overview

Cycle 5 at Melbourne Montessori College offers a diverse range of programs designed to cater to the unique needs of every student as they progress through secondary school.

Building upon the foundations of Cycle 4, Cycle 5 begins in Year 9 where students embark on a journey of learning Australian Curriculum subjects that are directly applicable to real-world scenarios. This establishes a meaningful connection between theoretical knowledge and practical applications.

Our curriculum, guided by the Montessori philosophy, blends experiential and academic learning, empowering students with a high level of agency, independence and self-direction in their education. Students participate in a variety of activities facilitated by external experts and benefit from their expertise and diverse skill sets.

“STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES FACILITATED BY EXTERNAL EXPERTS AND BENEFIT FROM THEIR EXPERTISE AND DIVERSE SKILL SETS.”

The studies in Year 9 and Year 10 are preparation for two distinct pathways: the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the Montessori Careers Program (MCP). These equip students with the knowledge, skills and mindset to excel in their chosen path, whether pursuing an internationally recognised diploma or engaging in a specialised career-oriented program.

At MMC, Cycle 5 fosters a dynamic and engaging learning environment, where students are encouraged to explore, discover and thrive as they navigate towards a successful and fulfilling future.

Areas of Study include:

Cycle 5 emphasises mastery of the English language. Through exploring literature, films and current affairs, students enhance their thinking and communication skills, develop analytical and evaluative abilities, and learn to effectively express their thoughts and perspectives.

Mathematics is as a foundation for discovery and invention. Students develop abstract thinking and analytical skills, applying mathematical principles and logic to analyse real-world data and solve problems.

Our integrated and hands-on approach to science covers botany, biology, chemistry, geology, zoology and physics. By studying their surroundings as a natural laboratory, students explore inter-relationship between different scientific disciplines and investigate concepts such as ecological systems, evolution, biochemical pathways, mechanics and engineering.

Humanities encompasses diverse subjects including history, geography, economics and sustainability. Students receive individual attention and gain a future perspective through rigorous academic work. A range of learning strategies encourage exploration of the interconnectedness of human endeavors.

Art and Design are woven into our lives and students develop specific learning, problem-solving and technical skills that they can apply in their education and beyond. They cultivate their artistic identity, explore creativity, and understand how design influences fields like communications, industrial practices and the environment.

Students are encouraged to learn Italian or Mandarin, applying their language skills in reading, conversations, performing and more. Learning a language fosters thinking skills, reflection and intercultural awareness.

Students are challenged to think critically, to question assumptions and delve into social, moral and ethical issues. They develop strategies to enhance their critical thinking skills in the classroom and in real-life situations.

Melbourne Montessori College students exhibit empathy, compassion and respect for others. They contribute to society by engaging in community service projects, volunteering with local organisations such as aged care homes, and supporting environmental initiatives. These experiences help them develop confidence, knowledge and practical skills so they can make a positive impact in their local and global communities.

Physical activities and sports give students an outlet to channel energy, challenge themselves and develop skills. They take part in activities ranging from rock climbing and basketball to golf, ultimate Frisbee and more, promoting physical wellbeing and personal growth.
