A Chair is More than Just a Chair – EL 0-3
- News
As part of the Early Learners Program at MMC, children are introduced to learning experiences grounded in their everyday world — objects they see, touch and interact with daily. In a recent session, a set of chairs became the focus — not simply as classroom furniture, but as a powerful tool for language development, observation and connection.
Children explored the parts of a chair —the back, the seat, the legs —and were invited to compare their sizes, sparking curiosity with questions like which one is the biggest? A Van Gogh painting of a chair displayed on the wall offered the chance for visual connection and recognition. As children routinely push in, sit on and carry chairs, it made this an ideal object for meaningful, real-world learning.
In the Montessori way, learning begins with the child’s immediate world. For children aged 0–3, it’s about understanding what is familiar and tangible. In Cycle 1, the focus shifts to the world around them, and by Cycle 2 and beyond, it expands to explore the universe — time, space and abstract concepts.
By starting with something as relatable as a chair, children engage in language-rich, purposeful exploration. To build on this interest, educators will introduce a chair-themed song and explore further extensions based on the children’s curiosity and engagement. In Montessori, even the simplest object can unlock deep and joyful learning.
