Lisa Shelton is a familiar face at MMC. Here she shares why she loves working at our school and spills some of her secrets…

How long have you been at MMC?

This is my third year of teaching here, although I have previously worked here casually as an aide and classroom assistant.

Where were you beforehand?

While studying, I worked as an assistant/aide in a range of educational settings including government schools, special education schools and day care.

What do you love about working at MMC?

I love being part of the MMC community! I am so grateful to be surrounded by staff, students and families who are passionate, inspiring and supportive.

As a Montessori educator, what inspires you?

It’s the children of course!

What is your most memorable teaching moment?

The first time I saw a young student persist with a long and difficult task, and seeing the pride on his face when he completed it.

What’s your most memorable moment as a school student?

I loved school and have many happy school memories. The ones that stand out most are being in drama productions in high school.

What are five interesting things about you that we may not know?

  1. I love writing. I have written two children’s books and one collection of short stories for adults.
  2. I am an admirer and collector of tattoos.
  3. I found Montessori by accident! I lived behind the Brighton campus and went on a tour out of interest, not knowing how that moment would change the trajectory of my life.
  4. Before working in education, I worked for many years as a dog groomer.
  5. In January, I will be marrying the love of my life.

What does your weekend look like?

Every Friday night, my family and I meet with my siblings, nieces, and parents to celebrate Shabbat. Saturday and Sunday are typically a time for children’s hobbies, parties, playdates, home chores, exercise, time with my partner, Shane, and time with my friends.

What is your favourite Maria Montessori quote and why?

“The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.” Maria Montessori, Education and Peace

This quote is just so full of optimism, and it reminds me of the importance of the work we do with children.
